Radiohead's camp reveals 'In Rainbows' sales figures
Just over a year after releasing via the Internet its most recent album, "In Rainbows," Radiohead , through its publisher, has gone public with the album's sales figures.
Released online last October using a pay-what-you-like pricing model, and in physical form earlier this year, "In Rainbows" has sold 3 million copies thus far, a figure that takes into account downloads from the group's website, physical CDs, a deluxe 2-cd/vinyl box set, and sales through Apple's iTunes Music Store and other digital retailers, according to a press release.
Despite giving fans the option to pay nothing for "In Rainbows," the band claims to have made more money during the three months prior to the album's physical release than it made total on 2003's "Hail to the Thief." Also, despite the album's availability online in late 2007, the physical release of "In Rainbows" still managed to top both the US and UK album charts following its release in January of this year.
The deluxe version of the album, priced at about $82, moved about 100,000 copies, and sales via iTunes clocked in at about 30,000 copies during the set's first week of availability, making it the No. 1 album in the store that week.
The figures surfaced over the weekend at the "You Are In Control" conference in Iceland, where Jane Dyball, head of business affairs for Radiohead's publisher, Warner Chappell, shared the information with attendees.
In related news, the group recently capped off its world tour in support of "In Rainbows," an outing that racked up a tally of about 1.2 million tickets sold, according to the band's publicist.
