Following the benefit, John will return to Las Vegas for another round of "Red Piano" shows, and then he'll haul the larger-than-life spectacular across the Atlantic for a string of European dates that stretch into late December. The "Red Piano" will be back in Vegas in February, and the show, which launched in 2004, will officially close in April, according to a news posting at John's website. But that doesn't mean the veteran entertainer will slow down.
He recently told GQ magazine he'll reteam with Billy Joel for a 2009 tour and he's got several other things up his sleeve, as well.
"I've never loved playing so much as I do now," John said in the interview. "I've got so much energy and so many things on the go. I want to do another Vegas show. I've got a full-length animation musical. I've got to try and write a film musical for Ben Stiller."
The Grammy winner also said he plans to record next year, although a new Elton John album isn't in the works just yet.
"Maybe the world isn't screaming for another Elton John record--I mean, there's 42 of them out there to choose from--unless I do something completely and utterly different," he told GQ. "I'm hopefully going to do something with Mark Ronson next year. I really love his feel for arrangements and the feel for the song. I'm going to do something where he's totally in charge and see what happens."
Last year, John revisited his top hits with "Rocket Man - Number Ones," which comprises 18 songs from the first 35 years of his career. The album accompanied the singer's 60th birthday celebration, which he marked with a record-breaking 60th performance at New York City's Madison Square Garden. That concert is captured on the two-disc DVD collection "Elton John 60: Live at Madison Square Garden."
The rock and roll icon's "Red Piano" show will also be released on CD/DVD later this month. The Best Buy exclusive includes the 14-song performance and a documentary about the making of the show.
Meanwhile, theater fans can catch John's compositions in "Billy Elliot The Musical," which opens on Broadway Nov. 13. The production, which is based on the 2000 Academy Award-winning film, has been drawing sellout crowds in London since 2005 and opened in Australia last year.
John's confirmed US dates are listed below and those overseas can be found at his website.
