Usher takes a 'Stand' on the road
R&B superstar Usher has assembled a North American trek to support his latest No. 1 album, "Here I Stand."
The 15-date club/theater outing kicks off Nov. 2 in Atlantic City, NJ, and makes its way to the West Coast before wrapping in Dallas at the end of the month. Stops include a Nov. 8 gig in Toronto and a two-night stand in Los Angeles. The full itinerary is listed below.
"Here I Stand" surfaced in May and became Usher's second consecutive No. 1 album in the US, selling 433,000 copies during its first week in stores. So far, the set has charted a half-dozen singles, including "Love In This Club," "Moving Mountains" and "Trading Places."
The record follows Usher's 2004 chart-topper, "Confessions," which sold some 1.1 million copies during its first week on shelves--the highest ever first-week sales for a male R&B artist. That album was the most successful of 2004, with more than 10 million units moved in the US and almost 20 million worldwide.
On his new record, the singer/actor/entrepreneur/humanitarian worked with big-name writers and producers including Jermaine Dupre, Stargate and Danja, and called in guest stars including Beyonce, Jay Z and Young Jeezy. Usher said the mission of his new material was to make people care about love again.
"This album is about the process of finding love, of wanting to be married to someone and spend your life with them," he explained in his bio. "You hope to find that person, and when you do, you go on a journey, and it consists of ups and downs, joys and temptations."
Usher's perspective on life has changed in the last year since he's become a husband and a father.
"I have a different understanding of what life is about, what business is about, what wealth is about," he said. "What you're seeing is the growth of an individual, the transformation of a boy into a man."
Usher was discovered and signed to LaFace Records more than 15 years ago following an appearance on television talent show "Star Search." He has since sold 35 million albums worldwide and won five Grammy Awards.
