Album Review: TV on the Radio, "Dear Science" (Interscope)

On their third major release, "Dear Science," Brooklyn experimental rockers TV on the Radio make powerful, moving songs that expand upon their signature full-bodied sounds and freewheeling approach.

"Halfway Home" opens the album with an optimistic mix of urgent, climactic new-wave electronic energy, hand-clapping and bah-bah-bah sing-song action. "Wild spirit winds from out your chest/Collides with world and wilderness," sings Tunde Adebimpe. His words prove that sometimes grasping the subject matter can be less important than engaging in the elevating dance-y music that surges and explodes.

The horn-driven "Crying" is a sexy-smooth funky romp featuring vocalist Kye Malone's falsetto skills. Malone's Prince-ness comes through on several more songs, but is never more apparent or captivating than on "Stork and Owl," a graceful and seductive violin-and-cello selection.

Coldplay is probably envious of "Family Tree," a dynamic, delicate, strings-and-keys ballad. Although musically and lyrically one of the simplest songs, it's also one of the album's most beautiful, accessible tracks. A complete departure from graceful and somber, but equally thrilling, is "DLZ," with its steady electric pulse, and dark lecture from Adebimpe. He sharply states, "This is beginning to feel like it's curling up slowly and finding a throat to choke."

With "Dear Science," TV on the Radio showcase a knack for seamlessly switching up musical genres and moods. Deep reflections get paired alongside dance beats, soul-heavy jams, cinematic Radiohead-like mixes and electric indie rock. Despite being radically different from one another, these 11 tracks offer such a variety of instruments and sounds that they never feel sparse or haphazard. It's a safe bet that even the softest, slowest tune will develop into a mind-blowing spirited anthem, which makes "Dear Science" such an intoxicating, inspiring listen.
