Sarah McLachlan plays around hits albums
Sarah McLachlan has booked a few October shows that surround the release of her forthcoming best-of album.
The folk-pop songstress will start with a New York City performance Oct. 6 and then jump over to Boston for the Oct. 11 "Mixfest 2008" concert with artists including Bryan Adams, Jordin Sparks and Matt Nathanson. She'll return to her native Canada a week later for a gig in Toronto. Details are listed below.
"Closer: The Best of Sarah McLachlan" is due Oct. 7 on Arista Records and will be released in regular and deluxe editions. The set comprises 14 tracks from the singer's award-winning catalog, as well as two new songs: "Don't Give Up on Us" and "U Want Me 2."
McLachlan recently told Billboard the new tunes are about her separation from Ashwin Sood, her husband of 11 years. She added that her breakup with Sood, who plays drums in her band, has been "pretty gross," but did not elaborate on the reasons.
"U Want Me 2" was released as a single earlier this month and is currently in the Top 20 on Billboard's Triple A chart. The tune is streaming at McLachlan's MySpace page.
Last spring, the performer released "Rarities, B-Sides and Other Stuff, Vol. 2," a collection of live performances, rare recordings, remixes and soundtrack contributions never before available on CD. The album also includes duets with Bryan Adams, Cyndi Lauper, Emmylou Harris, Ladysmith Black Mambazo and DMC from Run DMC.
McLachlan's latest studio recording is her 2006 Christmas offering, "Wintersong," which features holiday standards and covers of John Lennon, Joni Mitchell and Gordon Lightfoot songs. Her most recent set of original material is 2003's double-platinum-selling "Afterglow," which received a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Vocal Album.
McLachlan told Billboard she's working on more new material and hopes to have a new album ready within the next two years.
