Jennifer O'Connor backs new album
Folk-rock singer Jennifer O'Connor is heading out on a US trek to showcase material from her new album, "Here With Me."
Set to launch Sept. 7 in Sacramento, CA, the club tour will travel across the country through mid-October. The itinerary, which is listed below, includes a mix of headline shows and appearances with Damien Jurado, Hayden, Great Lake Swimmers and The New Year.
"Here With Me," O'Connor's second effort for Matador Records, hit the streets last week after the title track was named song of the day on National Public Radio. The 12-song set, produced by John Agnello (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr.), was recorded and mixed over 12 days at a studio in O'Connor's hometown of Brooklyn, NY. The singer/songwriter approached the sessions with her usual goal of making a record that's better than her last.
"I was also going for a more cohesive 'band' sound and I think we achieved it," O'Connor explained in her bio. "Since we made the record so quickly, there's a real sense of urgency and immediacy in the recording."
The album features O'Connor on vocals, guitars, piano and organ alongside a full band and guest performers including The Hold Steady's Franz Nicolay, singer Amy Bezunartea and Darren Jessee from Hotel Lights and Ben Folds Five. The full LP is streaming at O'Connor's website, and the video for the single "Always In Your Mind" is streaming at her MySpace page.
The performer's 2006 breakthrough, "Over the Mountain, Across the Valley and Back to the Stars," packed an emotional wallop with songs written following the death of a sister from brain cancer and the end of a long-term relationship. With the new record, the emotion remains, but the subject turns to love.
"This album has a lot of the same themes I've always written about, but it's fair to say that this one is made predominantly of love songs," O'Connor said. "'Here With Me' refers to my girlfriend, but also to people I've lost--they stay with me in my heart and mind."
