Brian Wilson schedules shows around 'Sun'
Brian Wilson has added a few dates to his fall concert trip ahead of the Sept. 2 release of the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer's latest studio album, "That Lucky Old Sun."
The veteran singer/songwriter and Beach Boys mainstay will kick off the run Sept. 5 in Oakland, CA. The new shows supplement Wilson's previously announced three-night engagement (9/12-14) at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. Other stops en route include Reno (9/6) and Primm (9/9) NV, and Santa Barbara, CA (9/10). All dates are below.
On "That Lucky Old Sun," Wilson collaborated once again with longtime writing partner Van Dyke Parks and bandmate Scott Bennett. The album--described by Wilson in a press release as an "interwoven series of 'rounds' with interspersed spoken word," and as an autobiographical travelogue of sorts--was recorded at Capitol Studios in Hollywood.
The set, the singer/songwriter's first studio effort since his 2004 re-recording of the Beach Boys' "Smile," marks Wilson's return to Capitol/EMI, the label that launched the Beach Boys' career with the 1962 hit "Surfin' Safari/409."
"I'm thrilled to be back home with Capitol, and I'm looking forward to sharing 'That Lucky Old Sun' with everyone," Wilson said in a press release. "This music is really special to me."
Wilson, who debuted "That Lucky Old Sun" last fall during a six-night run at London's Royal Festival Hall, is teaming with Gannett to offer a preview of the new set. Visitors to select Gannett sites, including USAToday.com, will be able to listen to a streaming version of the entire album starting today (8/22) and running through Sept. 1, a day before the album arrives in stores.
