Giant Sand blows across the US
Americana singer/songwriter Howe Gelb is taking his band Giant Sand out for fall spin to support their first new record in four years.
The group is set to head out in mid-September to support Neko Case on a 10-show string of dates in the Midwest, and then headline a handful of West Coast shows in October. Gelb will follow the US jaunt with a solo tour of New Zealand and Australia. Stateside dates are listed below and those overseas can be found at Giant Sand's website.
The band's forthcoming release, "proVisions," is due Sept. 2 on Yep Roc Records. Produced by Gelb and Kent Olsen (Arizona Amp and Alternator, Marie Frank), the 13-track album was recorded during a summer in Denmark with Danish musicians Thoger T. Lund (bass), Peter Dombernowsky (drums) and Anders Pedersen (slide guitar). It also features friends/collaborators including Case, M. Ward and Isobell Campbell.
One of the set's tunes, "Incarnations of Love," is being previewed at Giant Sand's MySpace page.
As a bandleader and a solo artist, Tucson, AZ-based Gelb has built a catalog of music that stretches back to 1983 and comprises some 40 albums, according to his bio. His music is described as a genre-defying brand of experimental Americana that draws from country, southwestern roots, lo-fi, jazz and punk.
With Giant Sand, Gelb has hosted a revolving door of musicians who have gone on to create bands including Calexico, The Friends of Dean Martinez and OP8.
