Rock and Roll Hall of Famers R.E.M. [ tickets ] have extended their world tour to include a handful of North American fall shows, and more may be on the way.

The band, which is in the midst of an extensive European jaunt, will return to the US in time for an Oct. 24 gig in the Dallas area. As previously announced, R.E.M. will also headline the final night of the 10th annual New Orleans Voodoo Music Experience Oct. 26, and the trio has booked a Nov. 18 concert in Mexico City. A posting at R.E.M.'s website tells fans to stay tuned for further tour announcements in the coming days.

The Dallas-area performance at Nokia Theatre at Grand Prairie, featuring support from Old 97's, goes on sale to the general public Aug. 22. Fan club members will have access to pre-sale tickets next Tuesday (8/19). The New Orleans and Mexico City dates are currently on sale.

R.E.M hit the road in May, starting with a 16-date North American tour, to support its 14th studio album, "Accelerate." The set, released in April, snagged the No. 2 spot on The Billboard 200 and scored a hit single with "Supernatural Superserious," which has made an impact at mainstream-rock, modern-rock and pop radio. The video for that tune and a few others are streaming at R.E.M.'s MySpace page.

The 11-song "Accelerate," co-produced by the band and Jacknife Lee (U2, The Hives), lives up to its name, clocking in at 34 minutes. In contrast to R.E.M.'s last couple of records--the mid-tempo "Around the Sun" (2004) and "Reveal" (2001)--the new offering returns the band to its earlier, stripped-down, fast-paced rock stylings.

Last year, the alt-rock heroes released "R.E.M. Live," their first concert CD/DVD of their 27-year career.
