Stephen Malkmus throws out more 'Trash' dates

Singer/songwriter Stephen Malkmus and his band, The Jicks, have lined up a quick fall tour as they continue to support their latest set, "Real Emotional Trash."

Malkmus and The Jicks--who recently completed a tour of the UK--will kick off the run Oct. 23 in Calgary, Alberta. The nine-city tour splits between Canadian dates and appearances in the US Midwest.

Experimental folk rockers (and fellow Portland residents) Blitzen Trapper will handle opening support for the trek. Details are below.

"Real Emotional Trash," which hit stores in March on the Malkmus' longtime label, Matador, is the singer/songwriter's fourth album with The Jicks, following 2005's "Face the Truth." The set is the first Jicks' LP to feature former Sleater-Kinney drummer Janet Weiss, who joined the band as a full-time member last year.

A track from the new album, "Baltimore," is available as a free download from Matador Records' Malkmus page.

In a recent interview with Spin Magazine, Malkmus said that his latest work pushes him into a more guitar-hero-oriented role than his days in Pavement.

"I probably feel like, with my limited vocal range and limited topics that I'm even interested in singing about, it's logical that I'd rather just get to the instrumental part," he said. "I like singing and I like melodies and stuff, and in concert I like to let it go and feel the singing, but in practice you don't really want to do that over and over again. With guitar, there's always something to discover."
