Liam Finn headlines North America

Experimental-pop artist Liam Finn will return to North America next month to support Eddie Vedder 's East Coast run before launching his first headlining trek of the US and Canada as a solo artist.

The New Zealander, who's the son of Split Enz/Crowded House's Neil Finn and frontman of NZ band Betchadupa, will spend the majority of August playing two-night stands with Vedder in major markets including Boston, New York City, Toronto and Chicago. He'll return to several of those cities during his headlining jaunt, which is set to kick off Sept. 4 in the Big Apple and make its way to the West Coast and back through Oct. 10. Finn's collaborator, Eliza-Jane Barnes, will join him on tour, as will special guests The Veils. His full itinerary is listed below.

The 24-year-old performer, known for his manic live performances and DIY creative process, uses effects pedals to create, sample and loop bass, guitar, drums and vocals to layer with his live vocals and guitar.

"I think the fact of doing this looping, one-man-band sort of thing really keeps you on your toes and keeps it fresh," Finn said in his bio. "The more you mess up, the more you're forced to turn it into a good mess and people seem to respond more. I find it really stimulating. I just love the danger of it, really."

Finn translated his one-man balancing act onto his debut solo album, "I'll Be Lightning," which hit US shores in January. The set, written, produced and engineered by Finn himself, was recorded live to analog tape with minimum pre-production to keep a demo-like quality.

"Your demos always end up being the versions of your songs that you fall in love with but never release," Finn explained in a statement. "You keep on trying to make them 'better' with a band, an engineer, a producer and so on, but you usually fail, so I thought I'd release the demos instead. Of course that means there are heaps of mistakes in there, but they add a lot of character. The accidents and the mistakes often become your favorite bits.''

Several songs from "I'll Be Lightning" are streaming at Finn's MySpace page.

The performer is also planning an August release for "Live at the Wiltern," an EP recorded during dates with Vedder earlier this year.
