America pushes 'Here & Now' into 2009

Soft-rock veterans America are keeping a steady pace on the road, with North American dates extending well into next year.

The duo, comprising Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell, is set to resume its tour Aug. 15 in Westbury, NY. The musicians will play US dates from coast to coast into November and then jump into 2009 with a run of shows in Ontario, as well as stateside performances into next summer. The itinerary listed below.

Next month, America will also venture out for gigs in the Brazilian cities of Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte and Sao Paulo. Details about those shows can be found at the band's website.

America continues to support last year's "Here & Now," a double-CD package that includes the group's first new material in more than 20 years alongside a live disc of classic hits. Producers Adam Schlesinger (Fountains of Wayne) and James Iha (Smashing Pumpkins) put a fresh spin on the new material, along with collaborators Ryan Adams, Ben Kweller, and members of My Morning Jacket, Nada Surf and Maplewood.

The live disc, recorded at XM Radio, features renditions of songs found on America's 1975 multiplatinum-selling greatest hits collection, "History." Several tunes from "Here & Now" are streaming at America's MySpace page.

In September, the group also plans to release a DVD of its performance on PBS-TV's "SoundStage."

Though America has largely faded from the headlines since its last Top 10 hit, 1982's "You Can Do Magic," the Grammy-winning band has continued to release albums and tour the nostalgia concert circuit on the strength of hits including "Horse With No Name," "Ventura Highway," and "Sister Golden Hair."
