Benji Madden: Good Charlotte's sound still growing
Joel and Benji Madden may have released Good Charlotte 's self-titled debut eight years ago, but it's only now, in the wake of last year's "Good Morning Revival," that the twins feel like the band is hitting its stride.
"We just kind of felt like we were starting a new chapter, musically, for us," guitarist Benji Madden told LiveDaily. "We were experimenting a little bit [and] at the same time, everybody's at new places in their lives. All of us have grown up a little bit. The first record came out in 2000. Now it's '08. It's been some time."
The joyous vibe of the band's fourth full-length album is shared in songs like the infectious club number "(I Don't Wanna Be in Love) Dance Floor Anthem" that dabbles in the band's former pop-punk sound, as well as "The River," a musically spunky duet with M. Shadows and Synyster Gates of Avenged Sevenfold. Good Charlotte's latest single, the ballad "Where Would We Be Now," made its radio splash May 20.
"Musically, we just developed more of a sound and made our own," Madden said. "[We] just kind of became a little more sure of ourselves and figured out what we really like. We're just a little more confident in who we are."
Madden, who dates Paris Hilton, expects that newfound confidence to show when Good Charlotte co-headlines "The Soundtrack of Your Summer Tour" with Girls Like Boys and special guests Metro Station and The Maine. (See below for the itinerary.)
"We played a bunch of radio shows with those guys," Madden said of Girls Like Boys. "They were really nice. They had all seen us play at certain shows. They were telling us stories of where they saw us play. Me and Joel left radio shows and said, 'Those kids are nice. Let's do a tour together.' We just said it and it came together."
It's been about a year and a half since the release of "Good Morning Revival" and Madden explained that the band--which also includes Billy Martin (guitars), Paul Thomas (bass) and Dean Butterworth (drums)--has begun writing new material.
"Once we finish this tour, we're going to really get into starting to make a new record. We'll be writing some on the tour. But we've written a couple songs that I like. You always have to write for a few months because, by the time that you're writing, you get in a groove and you write a group of songs that kind of fit together and that becomes a record."
