Steven Curtis Chapman resumes tour after family tragedy

Contemporary Christian singer/songwriter Steven Curtis Chapman will resume his summer tour plans after a tragic accident that took the life of one of his daughters.

Chapman's 5-year-old daughter, Maria Sue, died May 21 after being struck by a car driven by her teenage brother in the driveway of the family's home near Franklin, TN, according to a statement at the singer's website. The girl was airlifted to Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville, where she died of her injuries.

Maria Sue was one of Chapman's six children, and one of three adopted from China by Chapman and his wife, Mary Beth, who are both strong advocates of adoption. The couple started their own ministry, Shaohannah's Hope, to offer grants to qualified families wishing to adopt children from abroad.

"These have been dark and trying days of deep sadness," said Chapman's co-managers, Dan Raines and Jim Houser, in a statement posted on the singer's website. "The Chapman family is struggling with grief and wrestling to come to terms with the new normal. It will be a long road. And yet, we want you to know that we see them holding on to the truth of Gospel, just as we hope we would, just as you expect they might. It is not a false strength, nor a false hope. It is authentic sorrow and true belief simultaneously."

Chapman will return to the road with a July 11 appearance at Lifest, a Christian music festival in Oshkosh, WI. Details are below.

Chapman continues to tour behind his 16th studio album, "This Moment," which hit stores last October. It follows 2004's "All Things New," which peaked at No. 22 on The Billboard 200 chart.

During Chapman's two decades in the music industry, he has won five Grammys and a record-breaking 51 Dove Awards.
