Coldplay drafts Santogold to open select dates
Coldplay has tapped up-and-coming singer/songwriter Santogold to open several dates on the North American leg of its world tour.
Santogold has garnered critical acclaim for her recently released self-titled debut, which broke into The Billboard 200 and reached No. 2 on the Top Electronic Albums chart. She'll showcase her genre-bending mix of punk, reggae, indie rock and electro at stops in Chicago, Philadelphia, Montreal, Toronto, Boston, Washington, DC, and Hartford, CT.
After delaying the start of its North American trek citing production delays, Coldplay set the July 14-15 shows in the Los Angeles area as the official launch. The first leg will cover nearly a dozen markets in the US and Canada through early August and then the British rockers will head out for dates in Japan and Europe. They are scheduled to return to the US for a second run of shows in November. North American gigs are included below and those overseas can be found at the group's website.
Before the tour rolls out, Coldplay will play a free show June 23 at New York City's Madison Square Garden to showcase material from its new album, "Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends," which hit record stores this week.
The highly anticipated studio set, Coldplay's fourth, was produced by Brian Eno and Markus Dravs. It has already scored hits in the modern-rock and pop genres with "Violet Hill" and "Viva la Vida."
The new record follows Coldplay's 2005 Grammy-nominated set, "X&Y," which entered The Billboard 200 at No. 1 and has since sold more than 10 million copies on the strength of hits including "Talk," "Fix You" and "Speed of Sound."
