My Morning Jacket nabs coveted NYC New Year's slot

My Morning Jacket , fresh off the release of a new album and an impending appearance at the Bonnaroo Festival, has announced plans to play a New Year's show in New York City.

The band, which kicks off a short run of North American dates June 16 in Toronto before heading to Europe for a month-long outing, will hold down the traditional New Year's slot at Madison Square Garden, an honor that has gone in past years to the likes of Billy Joel and Phish.

The group will help open the three-day Bonnaroo Festival in Manchester, TN, tonight (6/13), as part of a Friday lineup that also includes The Raconteurs, Metallica, M.I.A. and Tiesto.

The band's scheduled North American dates are listed below; the international schedule can be found at the group's website.

"Evil Urges," My Morning Jacket's fifth studio album, hit stores earlier this week via ATO Records. The disc adds funk beats and synthesizers to the band's typical psychedelic southern-rock sound, according to various interviews.

Frontman Jim James told The Onion's A.V. Club last week that the band made a conscious decision to change things up on the new record.

"When we had our own studio, we made an effort to record on different tape machines and use different gear," he said. "Now we make an effort to go to different studios and work with different producers and use different equipment. So there's always been a conscious effort to sound different. But from a songwriting perspective, I can only get what I can get."

The new album follows MMJ's 2006 live set, "Okonokos," which features 21 tracks and is accompanied by a DVD concert film of the same name. My Morning Jacket's most recent studio offering, "Z," was named the best album of 2005 by LiveDaily's critics.
