"Hard Candy," the latest album from pop icon Madonna , sold about 280,000 copies during its first week in stores, enough to claim the top slot on the latest chart.

The chart-topping debut marks the seventh time that Madonna has snagged the No. 1 position on The Billboard 200, results for which are based on Nielsen SoundScan sales figures.

"Hard Candy" shoves down one notch to No. 2 the latest from fellow diva Mariah Carey , whose "E=MC2" logged on at No. 1 last week, and Leona Lewis ' "Spirit" from No. 2 to No. 3.

Lyfe Jennings ' "Lyfe Change" makes its debut at No. 4, and British rock veterans Def Leppard take No. 5 with their latest set, "Songs from the Sparkle Lounge," marking the group's 11th consecutive Top 20 album, according to Billboard.

Rounding out the Top 10 are The Roots ' "Rising Down" at No. 6, Portishead 's "Third" at No. 7, Mudcrutch 's self-titled set at No. 8, the "NOW 27" hits compilation at No. 9 and Tim McGraw 's "Greatest Hits Vol. 1 and 2"--which available exclusively from Wal-Mart--at No. 10.
