Cat Power plots some new shows, makeup dates
The singer/songwriter--also known as Chan Marshall--cut three Texas dates and appearances in Mexico, Columbia and Austria out of her schedule last week after being told by her doctor that she had damaged her vocal chords and needed to lay off singing for several weeks, according to her record label, Matador.
Fortunately for fans, Marshall's recovery seems to be progressing well. The singer will make her planned May 3 appearance in Memphis, TN, followed by a rescheduled May 5 show in Mexico City. The three Texas shows now appear at the end of her current schedule in October, along with a few newly added concerts. All dates are shown below.
Marshall continues to tour behind her most recent studio effort, "Jukebox," a mixed bag of big hits and obscure oldies that marks her second set of covers, alongside 2000's "The Covers Record." The new disc, which hit stores in January, includes among its 12 tracks renditions of Joni Mitchell's "Blue," Bob Dylan's "I Believe in You" and the canonical "Theme From New York, New York," popularized by both Liza Minnelli and Frank Sinatra, as well as a Marshall original, "Song to Bobby."
The album, which debuted at No. 12 on The Billboard 200 chart after selling about 29,000 copies in its first week, according to Neilsen SoundScan, is also available as a limited-edition, silver-foil set that includes a bonus disc with five additional songs.
"Jukebox" follows 2005's "The Greatest," which Marshall recorded in Memphis in 2005 with a group of veteran R&B session players. The disc earned the singer the 2007 Shortlist Prize, given annually by a panel of music-industry figures and journalists to the best album released in the US each year that doesn't garner mainstream success.
