Jimmy Buffett, Cat Power head Newport Folk Festival roster
The long-running, multi-day festival, set this year to run Aug. 1-3 in its traditional home of Newport, RI, has broadened its booking approach for the 2008 event, mixing old stand-bys like Buffett with younger, up-and-coming acts like Calexico , My Morning Jacket's Jim James and indie duo She & Him (M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel).
Other names announced in the festival's initial rollout include Levon Helm , Stephen & Damian Marley, Brandi Carlile , Jakob Dylan and The Felice Brothers. The event's complete current lineup is included below.
"We have taken great care in selecting the artists for this year's Newport Folk Festival," said Festival Network CEO Tom Shepard in a press release. "The festival is one of the oldest music events in the United States and this year's lineup will respect its storied history while bringing in a new crop of artists that represent the future of American music."
Tickets go on sale April 23. For more information on various ticket packages and pricing, visit the event's corporate website.
The storied festival, which helped launch the careers of Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, among others, was founded in 1959 by folk singers Theodore Bikel, Oscar Brand and Pete Seeger, along with George Wein, founder of the already-established Newport Jazz Festival.
