Album Review: James McMurtry, "Just Us Kids" (Lightning Rod)

April 16, 2008 11:04 AM
James McMurtry has never been one to mince words, and, just like his previous releases, the gruff-voiced singer's self-produced ninth album bears witness to that. Full of bold-faced, opinionated references to political figures and the sad state of the Union, "Just Us Kids" picks up where 2005's "Childish Things" left off, pointing out America's blemishes and embarrassments all too easily.

"God Bless America (Pat mAcdonald Must Die)" shakes a finger at corporate cronies profiting from international oil ("gonna turn up the heat 'til it comes to a boil/then we'll go get that Arab oil/we'll suck it all up through the barrel of a gun/everyday's the end of days for some") while "Cheney's Toy," the album's first single, blatantly tags the Commander in Chief as the elusive Vice President's political puppet. Coming from a native of George W's home state of Texas, these conspicuous statements could almost be construed as fighting words.

Despite the harsh subject matter, "Just Us Kids" contains the usual McMurtry style of almost spoken word coupled with seriously talented musicianship. Aside from the rhythm section (Daren Hess and Ronnie Johnson) of his established road band, McMurtry's latest work also features a handful of guest collaborators, including Jon Dee Graham, Pat mAcdonald of Timbuk3, C.C. Adcock and former Faces' keyboardist Ian McLagan.

Although the controversial nature of his latest work might polarize fans, James McMurtry has done a fine job of doing what he does best--using his well-honed songwriting talent to spark critical thinking among listeners worldwide.
