Oasis, Pet Shop Boys Cancel Roskilde Performances
update: Oasis and the Pet Shop Boys announced jointly on Saturday (7/1) that they were cancelling their Saturday performances at the Roskilde Festival.
The cancellation follows a Friday incident at the festival that left eight dead and 25 injured in a crowd crush that cut short a Pearl Jam performance.
In a statement issued Saturday afternoon via Oasis’ official website, the band said that they and the Pet Shop Boys had asked festival organizers to cancel their scheduled Saturday performances on the Orange Stage out of respect for Friday’s victims and their familes.
The statement added that the Orange Stage should be closed to all performances for the duration of the festival to allow authorities to perform a proper investigation of the incident.
Hours after their original statement, Oasis issued a second statement, saying, “As the Roskilde Festival promoters have been unable to guarantee an improvement in safety and out of respect to those who have been affected by this tradgey, both Oasis and the Pet Shop Boys have now pulled out of the festival.”
Roskilde officials said Saturday that the bands' decision to cancel could exacerbate the situation.
"By refusing to play for their fans in Roskilde the festival management feel that the bands are actually causing the fans more of a risk as they will now seek out the other smaller stages," Roskilde officials said in a written statement.
The statement further noted that both Oasis and the Pet Shop Boys have performed without incident at previous Roskilde festivals under identical security conditions.
The festival also took aim at the bands' indication that not performing was the best way to honor Friday's victims.
"The Roskilde Festival management are of the opinion that the bands that decide to follow through with their concerts on the existing and approved conditions show both respect and consideration to the dead, their families and the audience."
Along with the statement, a new performance schedule was issued late Saturday, channeling new acts to the festival's Orange Stage. The Rollins Band was scheduled to be the first act to take the stage Saturday.
According to festival organizers, thousands of flowers and candles had been placed near the Orange Stage Saturday, mourning those killed on Friday.
Pearl Jam issued a statement from the road early Saturday, calling the incident a “horrible nightmare.”
