VHS or Beta rides 'Comets' through spring

Electronic indie rockers VHS or Beta are heading out on a major North American jaunt as they continue to support their fall release, "Bring on the Comets."

The Kentucky-based group will play a one-off gig in Bogota, Colombia, later this month before launching the North American trek April 1 in Ann Arbor, MI. Plans include visits to nearly 35 clubs across the US and Canada, and a stop in Indio, CA, April 26 for the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival. After the outing wraps in mid-May, the band plans to jet to Australia for a few June performances. North American dates are detailed below and overseas shows can be found at VHS or Beta's website.

The band's 2007 tour marked the live debut of new guitarist Mike McGill, who joined the former trio made up of guitarist/vocalist Craig Pfunder, bassist Mark Palgy and drummer Mark Guidry.

"Bring on the Comets," released in August, is the musicians' third album in a career that has seen them evolve from straight-ahead indie-rock and pop to experimental electronic dancehall rhythms. Pfunder said that with the new album, the band didn't want to play into expectations based on the past.

"This was a chance for us to bring all of our musical tastes--from early on in our youth as well as our current environment--and incorporate them," Pfunder said in a statement. "So we do have a much more diverse offering, but one that paints a total picture that represents all of our musical passions in a cohesive way."

Several songs from the set are streaming at VHS or Beta's MySpace page.

"Bring on the Comets," which was produced by Brandon Mason (David Bowie, Secret Machines), follows VHS or Beta's 2005 offering, "Night on Fire," which reached No. 17 on Billboard's Top Electronic Albums chart.
