X regroups for 31st anniversary tour
The run--which will feature original members John Doe (bass/vocals), Billy Zoom (guitar), Exene Cervenka (vocals) and D.J. Bonebrake (drums)--is set to kick off with a performance at the March 2008 SXSW Music Festival in Austin, TX, and currently features stops in about a dozen cities. An April 10 show on the Los Angeles-based band's home turf caps the latest itinerary (shown below), but more shows will be announced, according to a press release.
Formed in 1977 when co-founders Zoom and Doe "placed virtually identically worded ads in the same paper on the same day looking to start a band," according to a press release, X was discovered by Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek. Though it never achieved widespread commercial success, the group turned out critically acclaimed albums including "Los Angeles" (1980), "Wild Gift" (1981) and "Under the Big Black Sun" (1982).
Thought X hasn't released an album of all-new material since 1993's "Hey Zeus!," Doe and Cervenka--who were married from 1980-1985--have issued a number of their own solo albums in the years since.
Doe's most recent release is last year's "A Year In the Wilderness," which he and his solo band will continue to support with a round of tour dates that will take place prior to the X outing. Included in Doe's solo itinerary is a lengthy stretch of February and March dates opening for Wilco. Details are posted at Doe's website.
In addition to his musical pursuits, Doe has also made a name for himself as an actor, most notably as a regular cast member on the now-defunct television series "Roswell."
