Grateful Dead Tribute Album Set For August Release

Grateful Dead Productions has announced the details of "Stolen Roses/Songs of the Grateful Dead," a CD that includes both previously released cover versions of Grateful Dead tracks and covers recorded specifically for the album, as well as a previously unreleased Patti Smith song titled "Black Peter" that was recorded on the night that Jerry Garcia died.

Among the tracks on the album, which is scheduled to be released on Aug. 8, are the Stanford Marching Band's rendition of "Uncle John's Band" and a live recording of "Friend of the Devil" performed by Bob Dylan.

The compilation was assembled by David Gans, host of the syndicated radio program "Grateful Dead Hour." The 15 tracks include two songs commissioned by Gans for the project: The Persuasions' take on "Black Muddy River" (the band will release a full album of Dead material titled "Might As Well" this fall) and a rendition of "Dark Star" by David Grisman.

Other tracks include a previously unreleased live Elvis Costello medley of "Ship of Fools" and "It Must Have Been the Roses," and a studio version of "Cream Puff War" which Widespread Panic recorded in response to Gans' request for an existing live recording of the song.

The album also includes "Cumberland Blues" by Cache Valley Drifters; an original cast recording of "High Time" from the world premiere of the stage play "Cumberland Blues;" "Brown-Eyed Woman" by the Pontiac Brothers; "Ripple" by Sex Mob; "The Golden Road" by the Bobs; "Unbroken Chain" by Joe Gallant and Illuminati; "Franklin's Tower" by Wartime Featuring Henry Rollins; and "Pasta on the Mountain" by Leftover Salmon .
