Bruce Hornsby, Ricky Skaggs team for spring jaunt

Virginia cool will once again collide with Kentucky thunder as genre-bending pianist Bruce Hornsby and bluegrass legend Ricky Skaggs launch a new slate of dates to support their eponymous album release.

The Grammy-winning musicians, who did a coast-to-coast US run in October, will re-team for shows in Lafayette, LA, and Mobile, AL, this weekend, and then play a steady stream of gigs from late March through early May. They have one-off dates scheduled in June and October, as well. Details are listed below.

Skaggs and his band, Kentucky Thunder, also have shows booked through September. Details about those can be found at the Skaggs Family Records website.

Last March, Hornsby and Skaggs released an 11-song set featuring Hornsby originals--including a new version of "Mandolin Rain"--traditional arrangements, and a tongue-in-cheek, hillbilly spin on Rick James' "Super Freak." The set shot to No. 1 on Billboard's Top Bluegrass Albums chart.

Hornsby also recently released his first full-length instrumental jazz album, "Camp Meeting," featuring bassist Christian McBride and drummer Jack DeJohnette. The pianist has been splitting his time gigging with the trio, with Skaggs, solo, and with his band, The Noisemakers.

A catalog of Hornsby concerts through 2007 are available for purchase on CD or immediate download at his website.

Skaggs is also shuffling between a few different touring lineups, including dates with Hornsby, Kentucky Thunder and country gospel group The Whites. Last fall, he collaborated with The Whites on "Salt of the Earth," which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Top Bluegrass Albums Chart and scored a Grammy nomination in the Best Southern, Country, or Bluegrass Gospel Album category.

Skaggs picked up his 12th Grammy last February for "Instrumentals," recorded with Kentucky Thunder.

A new Skaggs album, "Honoring the Fathers of Bluegrass: Tribute to 1946 and '47," is due out March 25.
