Dreams come true for Blake Lewis on 'Daydream'

When beatboxing "American Idol" runner-up Blake Lewis was a struggling musician, he claims he penned in a journal that the only person with whom he would work is record mogul Clive Davis.

Well, his aspirations came true. Davis signed Lewis to his 19 Recordings imprint after seeing the Washington state native on the sixth season of "American Idol."

"It's such an amazing experience to work with Clive," Lewis said in an interview with LiveDaily. "What a nice man to let me be a part of his record label. He let me do what I wanted on this record. It was a pretty amazing experience."

He is speaking of "Audio Day Dream," a collection of songs that includes the first single "Break Anotha," which he co-wrote with OneRepublic's Ryan "Alias" Tedder and ex-Color Me Badd singer Sam Watters. The red-hot Tedder, whose band currently has a Top 10 hit, "Apologize," with Timbaland, produced the single, as well.

"Ryan and I wrote eight songs together," Lewis said. "We're really good friends and he's a great musical creative companion. Sam was just great with production and he's a really nice guy. He knows how to produce vocals. Him and I wrote a song called 'End of the World,' my favorite ballad on the record."

Lewis also spread the musical love to his "American Idol" cohort Chris Richardson, with whom he co-wrote "Whatcha Got to Lose."

"We had an amazing time," Lewis said. "We wrote 'What'cha Got 2 Lose?' on the bus during the 'American Idol' tour. I got this beat from [producer] JR Rotem. I was really inspired by it. It has this really funky piano line and this beat. It was in my head for, like, three days. We wrote it and, man, it turned out great. I co-produced that track, which is huge for me to be a producer on my first record. It turned out amazing."

The 26-year-old, who is planning an early 2008 tour, said it was a "real treat" to work with the talent whom he and the record company chose for "Audio Day Dream." Besides Watters and Tedder, Lewis collaborated with his idol, producer BT.

"It didn't happen because of 'American Idol,'" Lewis said. "It happened because I opened for him three or four years ago. He wanted to get on this record. He didn't even know I was on 'American Idol.' We actually did a music video that he edited in BT fashion. Then we did one track, 'She's Makin' Me Lose It,' which I wrote on the tour bus. I finished writing with him in the studio. Working with him was such an honor. I've been so inspired by him. My solo shows are very much inspired by him."
