America continues road work throughout 2008
Classic mellow-rockers America , who have been touring the world since spring, now have North American dates spread out through next fall.
The duo, comprising Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell, will finish this year with December shows in the Philippines, Singapore, India and New Zealand. After a monthlong break, they'll start up again Jan. 16 in Melbourne, FL, and visit cities across the US into October. They'll also cross the border in February for gigs in Ontario and Mexico. Dates in North America and Mexico are listed below, while overseas shows can be found at the band's website.
America has made its way through the US, Canada and Australia since March, including a summer stint with fellow veteran act Chicago. The duo is supporting its January release, "Here & Now," a double-CD package that includes America's first new set of songs in more than 20 years alongside a live disc of classic hits.
The new material, produced by Adam Schlesinger (Fountains of Wayne) and James Iha (Smashing Pumpkins), sees Beckley and Bunnell collaborating with Ryan Adams, Ben Kweller, and members of My Morning Jacket, Nada Surf and Maplewood.
The live disc was recorded at XM Radio and features renditions of songs found on America's multiplatinum-selling greatest hits collection, "History."
A few tunes from "Here & Now" are streaming at the band's MySpace page.
Though America has largely faded from the headlines since its last Top 10 hit, 1982's "You Can Do Magic," it has continued to release albums and tour the nostalgia concert circuit on the strength of hits including "Horse With No Name," "Ventura Highway," and "Sister Golden Hair."
The group has earned six gold and/or platinum-certified albums and a Grammy in its four-decade career, and was recently inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame.
