Colbie Caillat rises thanks to 'Bubbly'
When singer-songwriter Colbie Caillat posted her now-ubiquitous song "Bubbly" on her MySpace page in September 2006, she never imagined anything would come of it.
More than 3.3 million plays of "Bubbly" and 11 million profile views later, Caillat is a bona fide rising star. She became the No. 1 unsigned artist on MySpace for four successive months, garnering 10 million plays total. Record labels started courting her and she signed with Universal Republic because, she says, they offered her total creative freedom.
"It's crazy. I had no idea that would happen," Caillat said during an interview with LiveDaily.
Her album, "Coco," named after her childhood nickname, hit the Top 10 thanks to MySpace exposure. Before her breakthrough success, Caillat took a laid-back approach to her career. For example, her friend created her MySpace page for her.
"We had a bunch of musician friends and they had all their songs up there. My friend said, 'You need to do that. You have to have a music page.' I didn't know how to so she made one for me."
Caillat's friends also had a hand in booking her performances because she was nervous about live shows.
"I was performing every once in awhile at little coffee shops. My friends had to get me to do that. They would have to book the shows for me and tell me that I should play," she said with a chuckle. "I was nervous. I wanted to do it but I was scared. I'd say, 'I'd rather not do it then do it and be good.' They're like, 'No, you should do it and get over your fears.' Eventually, I started doing it."
Caillat admitted she still gets nervous, however, she is now in the throes of promoting "Coco," which features the sunny song "Bubbly," a tale of love's first blush.
"I still get nervous. It comes and goes, though. It's so great because, at the shows, all the fans in the audience, they sing along to every song. It's such a great feeling."
Caillat's family connections didn't hurt in her quest for success. She is the daughter of producer/engineer Ken Caillat, who co-produced Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours" and "Tusk" albums, and later ran his own record label. Like her friends, Caillat's parents pushed her to be driven.
"He told me to learn how to play an instrument and write my own songs," the younger Caillat said. "My parents have been telling me that since I was younger. They would put me in piano lessons and vocal lessons, but I was too young to pay attention. Then when I got older--I was 19--my dad said, 'Really, I'm not joking. That's the way to go.' So I took guitar lessons, and look what happened."
It was when she was 20 that she started taking her career seriously. Now 22, Caillat is stunned at how quickly she found fame.
"It's insane. It takes some getting used to. But I'm learning as I go. I wasn't prepared for anything. My first big tour was with Lifehouse and The Goo Goo Dolls, playing in front of 5,000 to 10,000 people. It's all been a great learning experience."
