Melanoma treatments sideline E Street Band's Danny Federici

The E Street Band's Danny Federici [ tickets ] is taking a leave of absence from Bruce Springsteen [ tickets ]'s backing group to undergo treatment for melanoma.

According to a statement, Federici will be replaced on keyboards by Charles Giordano--who played in Springsteen's Sessions band--beginning Sunday (11/24) in Madrid.

"Danny is one of the pillars of our sound and has played beside me as a great friend for more than 40 years," Springsteen said in a prepared statement. "We all eagerly await his healthy and speedy return."

Springsteen and his band wrapped up a round of North American dates Monday night (11/20) in Boston, reportedly playing a set that touched on many songs in which Federici played a key part, including "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out" and "Kitty's Back."

Federici--who began playing keyboards with Springsteen in the 1960s--sax player Clarence Clemons and bassist Garry Tallent are the only original members of the E Street Band who remain with the group.

Springsteen and his band are heading overseas to tour Europe, but will be back in North America in late February to launch a lengthy round of arena dates.
