Willie Nelson stretches tour into February
Willie Nelson , who will be on the road again in January, has added more dates to his 2008 trek and booked one more gig for this year.
The hard-touring country legend finished his latest US jaunt earlier this month, but will take in one more stop before year's end: the Nov. 24 Maui Music Festival in Kahului, HI.
The Red-Headed Stranger is scheduled to start the new year with a recently added Jan. 6 show in Dothan, AL. From there, he'll play seven concerts across Florida and then head West for February gigs in California, New Mexico and Arizona. He'll also join Merle Haggard for a Feb. 9 performance to celebrate the opening of a new convention center at the Peppermill Hotel Casino in Reno, NV.
Earlier this month, Nelson was honored as a BMI Icon at the performing-rights organization's annual country awards ceremony. Stars including Toby Keith, Kris Kristofferson, Keith Urban and Emmylou Harris were on hand to pay musical tribute to Nelson, who was feted for his influence on generations of music makers.
In addition to relentless touring, the 74-year-old performer has pumped out a steady stream of albums lately, the latest one being a collaboration with big-band singer/pro-golfer Don Cherry. "It's Magic," which surfaced Oct. 9, comprises 12 classics including "What a Wonderful World," "You've Changed" and the title track.
March saw the release of the two-disc set "Last of Breed," which teamed Nelson with fellow Country Music Hall of Famers Merle Haggard and Ray Price. Nelson recently told the Austin American-Statesman that his next record will be a collaboration with sister Bobbie Nelson and Jessica Simpson.
Meanwhile, fans can catch the Grammy-winning icon this Sunday (11/25) on "American Voices: A Conversation with Dan Rather and Willie Nelson," which will air on high-definition cable channel HDNet. During the one-on-one interview, Nelson talks about the war in Iraq, the controversial farm bill and the legalization of marijuana, according to a press release. The program will precede the high-def presentation of "Farm Aid 2007: A Homegrown Festival," which captures the September event in New York City.
