Ingrid Michaelson puts exclamation point on remarkable year
Topping off a year that saw her shoot from virtual unknown to search-engine sensation, singer/pianist Ingrid Michaelson will tackle a headlining run through the end of December.
The New York-based performer and her band (guitarists Allie Moss and Bess Rogers, drummer Elliot Jacobson and bassist Chris Kuffner) will kick off the rest of their year Nov. 9 in Chicago, the first of 12 dates remaining on the singer's calendar.
Michaelson is touring behind the physical release of her debut album, "Girls and Boys." The self-released set was originally available through online channels and promoted by the singer on her MySpace page, where it drew the attention of the music supervisor for ABC-TV's hit drama "Grey's Anatomy," who wanted to use the album's "Breakable" for an upcoming episode.
Two more of Michaelson's songs were eventually used on the show, including the track "Keep Breathing," which was featured on the program's season finale earlier this year, an episode seen by more than 25 million viewers, according to the singer's publicist. Michaelson's "The Way I Am" also recently appeared in an Old Navy spot that is currently airing nationally. The performer's name and song titles have appeared among the top 50 Google searches "multiple times," according to a press release.
Michaelson recently addressed her sudden rise on her MySpace blog, noting that many fans will consider her recent success as a compromise of her artistic integrity."
"I have gotten a few emails and comments saying that now that my songs are on TV and mainstream radio programs, that I have become 'a sellout,'" she wrote. "I have seen this before. It makes me a bit upset because it seems that some people love knowing about an indie artist, but as soon as they garner some attention, these people get mad! But you have to understand that this is how we make a living!"
