Silverchair stretches out tour plans

With frontman Dan Johns' health problems behind them, Australian rockers Silverchair are tacking more shows onto their upcoming US tour.

The group, which launches the run on the West Coast in mid-November, has added a half-dozen December dates to its itinerary, and more shows are in the works, according to a press release. Details for the confirmed shows are included below.

A number of the upcoming shows--including the the tour's Nov. 14 launch in Anaheim, CA--are make-up dates for shows that the band postponed earlier this year due to a throat infection that afflicted Johns at the time. The illness was the most recent in a string of health issues that have plagued Johns over the last few years, including reactive arthritis and anorexia.

"He's probably been the healthiest he's been, ever since I can remember," drummer Ben Gillies told LiveDaily in July. "It seems like there was one thing after another. First, there's anorexia then the arthritis. It just seemed so constant. I think at the end he was getting advice in Australia saying, 'You need to rest and you need to just not move.' This was when he had arthritis and very skinny as well. The people said 'Rest, don't move. You've just got to wait it out.' It was going on for months."

Silverchair is working the road behind its latest album, "Young Modern," which surfaced in April. The set topped the charts in the group's home country earlier this summer, the band's fifth consecutive album to do so. With that accomplishment, the group now has more No. 1 albums than any other Aussie band in history, including Midnight Oil (four), INXS (three) and AC/DC (three).

On Sunday (10/28), Silverchair won five ARIAs--the Australian equivalent of the US Grammys--more than any other artist at this year's ceremony. Among the group's take were trophies for Album of the Year, Best Group, Single of the Year, Best Rock Album and Highest Selling Single. The slew of awards brings the band's lifetime tally to 19, which earns the group the distinction of having won more ARIAs than any other artist, according to a press release.
