TVT Records Sues Napster

Record label TVT has joined the growing ranks of labels and artists suing Napster for copyright violations. The independent record label filed its suit on Wednesday (6/7) in U.S. District Court.

In addition to Napster, TVT's suit also fingers five to-be-named universities that TVT claims have let students download music over their campus' Internet networks using Napster's controversial MP3 file-trading software.

Hank Barry, Napster's interim CEO, responded to TVT's suit via a prepared statement.

"We at Napster are sorry that others think the future of music will be forged in a courtroom," he said "We are seeking to build new models of cooperation with artists and the music industry. We are confident of our position in court. We are even more confident that the future of music will be made by people working together to harness new technology rather than to repress it."

A spokesperson for TVT said the company is seeking $150,000 in damages for each one of the label's tracks that are available via Napster. The total number of tracks that the company claims have been made available via Napster was not available at press time.

TVT's suit is the latest in a string of suits filed against Napster by Metallica, Dr. Dre and the Recording Industry Association of America. TVT is not listed as a plaintiff in the RIAA's lawsuit against Napster.

TVT's artist roster includes Sevendust, Snoop Dog and Gravity Kills.
