Sea Wolf rides 'River' on fall tour

Singer/songwriter Alex Brown Church and his indie-pop outfit, Sea Wolf , will mount a fall tour behind their debut album, "Leaves in the River."

The group--primarily a vehicle for Church's songwriting featuring a revolving-door cast of backup musicians--will kick off nearly two months of roadwork Oct. 3 in San Francisco. The Los Angeles-based band will hit around 40 cities on the trek, which includes 13 co-headlining dates with alt-rockers Nada Surf.

Singer/guitarist Church will be accompanied on the outing by the same group that appears on the album: guitarist Aaron Robinson, keyboardist Lisa Fendelander, bassist Theodore Liscinski, drummer Byron Reynolds and cellist Aniela Perry. All dates are shown below.

"Leaves in the River," which hit stores in late September, was produced by Phil Ek (Built to Spill, The Shins), with assistance from engineer Jacquire King (Tom Waits).

Church initially came to Ek's attention in 2005, when some of the singer's early home recordings fell into the Seattle-based producer's hands, according to Sea Wolf's online bio. The amateur recordings were passed around to friends and acquaintances, leading to Church being invited to perform a month-long residence at Los Angeles club Spaceland late last year.

"The shows were so well received that things escalated pretty quickly," Church said in a press release. "By the second week, there was a line down the block. It was weird how, after years of struggling, it seemed to come together so quickly."
