Live Review: Maroon 5 in Auburn Hills, MI
Perhaps it was opening night jitters, but for someone who lives "on raw emotion," as he sings in "Wake Up Call," Maroon 5 singer/guitarist Adam Levine sure didn't show much excitement Saturday (10/1) at the Detroit area's Palace of Auburn Hills during the kick-off date of his band's tour.
Though he was generally stoic and pouty-lipped throughout the night, Levine rallied on occasion to clap his hands and encourage the audience to sing along to many of the band's hits, including "Harder to Breathe" and "Wake Up Call."
Levine, who donned a 1980s-style black leather coat with the sleeves rolled up, gray pants and a black mesh shirt with a tank underneath, bounced to the beat of "Harder to Breathe," and frequently used the catwalks on the stage, which were formed by the legs of the band's "M" logo. As he walked, Levine resembled a male model, intermittently stopping to pose with his left hand on his hip.
He also showed some appreciation for the crowd of about 9,000.
"We have been working very hard to get it [perfect] for this night," said Levine, who added that the band rehearsed in Michigan for several days. "It's really different when people are in here. We absolutely worship the fans of our music."
Levine became a little more animated around the fourth song, "The Sun." After an instrumental jam session, he jumped three times with his guitar before motioning for more applause from the audience.
"It is so wonderful to feel so much energy from all you people tonight," Levine said.
Musically, the band--which also includes guitarist James Valentine, keyboardist Jesse Carmichael, bassist Mickey Madden and drummer Matt Flynn--was tight. The setlist was heavy on the band's debut album, "Songs About Jane," and light on the follow-up, "It Won't Be Soon Before Now." Levine and Valentine often jammed together, and, during a sentimental moment, Levine hugged Valentine and called him his best friend while introducing his bandmates.
Levine and company paid homage to their peers. Levine morphed "Secret" into Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight." Meanwhile, Maroon 5 added a little of The White Stripes' "Icky Thump" to "Shiver." Red and white lights illuminated a giant M on the backdrop.
"This Love" took on a new feel as Levine sang backed only by the beat of Flynn's drums. After the audience sang the chorus, the entire band kicked in. Levine also showed off his multiple talents by playing toms to inject punch to the "It Won't Be Soon Before Long" cut "Little of Your Time," but the rough edges heard on the album rendition were too polished live, making the song lack the urgency of Its studio counterpart.
Levine and Valentine strolled down the catwalk to offer "She Will Be Loved," one of three songs from the encore. Levine took a dramatic pause during "She Will Be Loved," just after the line "I want to make you feel beautiful." He actually cracked a smile after the fans' applause intensified. Now if he could only add his personality to the rest of the show, he'd be set.
Newcomer Sara Bareilles and The Hives opened the show, and the Swedish 1960s-inspired rock group gave Maroon 5 a run for its money. Lead singer Pelle Almqvist copped his best Mick Jagger moves and said he was out to make 9,000 new fans while visiting The Palace of Auburn Hills. He was animated and chatty, the direct opposite of Maroon 5.
"We came all the way from Sweden, all the way to win the hearts of the Detroit people," Almqvist said.
