Deerhoof hits the big screen, maps fall tour

Indie rockers Deerhoof set out for a quick headlining tour this fall, with the band continuing to support its most recent full-length effort, January's "Friend Opportunity."

The San Francisco-area group will kick off a 12-city outing Sept. 21 in Houston, with an early Southwestern stretch followed later this month by a pair of dates in Canada before the trek winds down Oct. 6 in Salt Lake City. All dates are shown below.

"Friend Opportunity" was Deerhoof 's first full-length release since bassist Chris Cohen's amicable departure from the band last year. The album featured 12 different covers, with a default cover displayed in stores and alternate versions--all created by Scottish artist David Shrigley--contained inside the disc's packaging to allow fans to customize their own copies.

The album was recorded largely in the band's home studio shortly after Cohen's departure, and after the group decided to not immediately seek a replacement.

More recently, the band contributed music to the soundtrack of "Dedication," an independent film by actor and first-time director Justin Theroux ("Zoolander," "Inland Empire"). The band composed and performed nine original songs for the film, with Deerhoof's music comprising the entire official soundtrack album for the movie.

"Some of [Deerhoof's contribution] you will recognize right away because Justin uses it so prominently (it's shocking actually), and some of it is more subtle, like he's created some unusual sound collages using bits from several of our songs," drummer Greg Saunier recently wrote on the band's website.
