Celtic Woman brings Christmas spirit to the US

Irish act Celtic Woman is getting ready to celebrate the holidays with a new Christmas DVD and US tour.

The group, which currently comprises vocalists Chloe Agnew, Lisa Kelly, Orla Fallon and Lynn Hilary along with fiddle player Mairead Nesbitt, will play around the East and Midwest for about six weeks, beginning Oct. 10 in Estero, FL. Multiple shows are booked in Raleigh, NC; West Palm Beach, FL; and Charlotte, NC. Details are listed below. Following the US trek, the ladies will head to Japan.

Their forthcoming DVD, "A Christmas Celebration Live from Dublin," is a companion to last year's critically acclaimed "A Christmas Celebration" CD, which has shipped more than 400,000 copies, according to a press release. The DVD, due Oct. 2, features a host of holiday classics and original songs, including "Green the Whole Year Round."

Fans will also have the opportunity to catch the full DVD performance on a PBS-TV special that is scheduled to air during the network's December pledge drive. Celtic Woman's first PBS special has aired more than 3,400 times on 316 PBS stations since its March 2005 debut, according to a press release.

Between the group's 2005 self-titled debut and "A Christmas Celebration," Celtic Woman held the No. 1 position on the Billboard World Music chart for more than 95 consecutive weeks, according to its website.

In January, the ensemble released the platinum-selling album "A New Journey," which mixes contemporary hits and classical favorites with Irish standards. The set inspired another companion DVD, "A New Journey: Live from Slane Castle, Ireland."

Celtic Woman is the brainchild of Sharon Browne and Dave Kavanagh of Celtic Collections, Ltd., an Ireland-based independent record label. The pair, along with musical director David Downes, conceived the touring group to showcase the talent of Irish female singers and performers. Each of the women has also released her own solo album.
