Garth Brooks Gets First Hit For Padres
Garth Brooks appeared thrilled after achieving his first hit in a Padres uniform on Sunday in a spring-training game against the Chicago White Sox. The Padres ultimately lost the game 11-8, but Brooks' piece of the game was noted by many. "I bet that base hit to him means more than if he sells another million records," Padres general manager Kevin Towers said in an AP report. Brooks hugged Chicago's Frank Thomas in celebration after reaching first base.
The success nicely offset the embarassment of showing up at the wrong field for Saturday's game. According to a Sign On San Diego report, Brooks drove to Tucson's Electric Park early Saturday to make sure there was time to sign autographs before the Padres / Rockies game.
After spending an hour with fans outside the park, Brooks excused himself to join the arriving team bus, but when he tried to enter the clubhouse, Brooks was stopped by a security guard, who informed him that as a Padre, he couldn't enter because the Cubs and White Sox were the two teams playing at this ballpark.
Brooks rushed across town to Hi Corbett Field, where he arrived for his own game an hour late and grounded out in his only at-bat during the game.
