Slightly Stoopid infects US with 'Chronchitis'
The band, which blends styles including reggae, rock, hip-hop and funk, is currently co-headlining the Summer Haze Tour with G. Love & Special Sauce and Ozomatli . That trek, which kicked off early this month, has been selling out 4,000- to 8,500-seat amphitheaters around the country, according to a press release. It wraps Sept. 2 in in Boca Raton, FL, and Slightly Stoopid's fall run starts Sept. 22 at San Diego Street Scene in the group's California hometown. Dates are listed below.
Earlier this month, the band released its sixth independent album, "Chronchitis," selling close to 12,000 copies the first week and scoring the No. 55 slot on The Billboard 200. The record--which features guest artists Guru of Gang Star, Angelo Moore of Fishbone, Money Mark of the Beastie Boys and G. Love--is Slightly Stoopid's most mature offering to date, according to co-frontman Miles Doughty.
"We're getting older as people, as musicians, and, honestly, I think this record reflects everything from life to love, madness, good times, bad times; it's just all incorporated in this record," Doughty said in a statement. "It's life through our eyes."
Co-frontman Kyle McDonald added, "There's all sorts of stuff on this record. It's a good one to steal. If you're gonna steal one, steal this one."
A few songs from "Chronchitis" are streaming at Slightly Stoopid's MySpace page.
In their decade-long career, the bandmates--still in their 20s--have sold more than 300,000 records independently, according to a press release. They were discovered by the late Bradley Nowell of Sublime, who signed Slightly Stoopid to his Skunk Records label when founding members Doughty and McDonald were still in high school.
They went on to tour with the likes of Sublime, Dave Matthews Band and The Roots, and have played major festivals including Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits and New Orleans Jazzfest.
In fact, the hard-touring sextet has made quite an impact on the road, landing in the Top 50 touring bands for the first quarter of 2006, according to industry mag Pollstar. With their grassroots approach, the members of Slightly Stoopid have built a worldwide following of die-hard fans, lovingly referred to as Stoopidheads.
