Garth Brooks' Live Set Matches Bruce Springsteen’s Sales Mark
The 1998 Garth Brooks album “Double Live” has been certified by the Recording Industry Association of America for sales of 13 million copies, which lifts it into a dead-heat with Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band’s “Live 1975-1985” as the top-certified live album in U.S. history, the RIAA announced Friday (6/2). The organization now credits Brooks for total sales of 93.5 million albums in the U.S.
In another salvo for country music, George Strait’s 1995 box set “Strait Out of the Box” was certified in May for 7 million copies sold, matching the “Led Zeppelin” box set for the title of highest-certified box set released in the ‘90s, according to the RIAA.
‘N Sync’s “No Strings Attached”--which was released less than three months ago--was RIAA-certified for sales of 8 million copies.
Several Rolling Stones albums reached new milestones in May. “Some Girls” was certified at the 6 million mark, tying the greatest-hits album “Hot Rocks 1964-1971” as the band’s top-selling title. “Tattoo You” was certified four times platinum, "Sticky Fingers" and “Goat’s Head Soup” triple-platinum, and “Emotional Rescue” double-platinum. Hitting the one million sales milestone this month were “Exile on Main Street,” “It’s Only Rock and Rol1,” Made in the Shade,” and “Still Life.” “Rewind” was certified gold.
Santana’s “Supernatural” has been certified 12-times platinum, making it one of the four top-selling albums in Arista Records history.
Artists who were awarded their first platinum albums in May--signifying 1 million copies sold in the U.S.--include Jagged Edge for “J.E. Heartbreak,” Bloodhound Gang for “Hooray for Boobies,” Donell Jones for “Where I Wanna Be,” Fuel for “Sunburn,” 3 Doors Down for “The Better Life” and Slipknot for its self-titled debut.
In all, the RIAA awarded 31 multi-platinum, 26 platinum and 46 gold albums in May.
