Fats Domino's lost awards to be replaced

Rock-and-roll pioneer Antoine "Fats" Domino, who lost most of his possessions in Hurricane Katrina, including his gold records, will have his sales awards replaced during a ceremony next week.

Domino's home in New Orleans' Lower Ninth Ward was destroyed in the flooding that consumed much of the city following the 2005 hurricane. Capitol/EMI will present the entertainer with reproductions of 20 of his sales awards for his chart-topping hits in the '50s and '60s.

Along with the award reproductions, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) will present Domino with a custom award honoring his "musical career and legacy," according to a press release. The ceremony will take place Monday (8/13) at the French Quarter nightclub Tipitina's.

Domino released an album, "Alive and Kickin'," in early 2006 to benefit Tipitina's Foundation, a non-profit organization founded by club owner Bill Taylor to assist the city's indigent musician population. Domino also returned to live performing this May on the club's stage.

A day after the ceremony honoring the performer, Capitol/EMI will release "Greatest Hits: Walking to New Orleans," a new 30-track career overview. The set includes all eight of Domino's No. 1 hits with Imperial Records from 1950 to 1963.
