Farm Aid nabs Allmans, Counting Crows, others
The Allman Brothers Band and Counting Crows have joined the lineup of this year's urban version of the Farm Aid benefit concert, set to take place Sept. 9 at New York City's Randall's Island.
The event, with mainstay co-founders Willie Nelson , Neil Young and John Mellencamp on board as usual, will also feature country duo Montgomery Gentry and Hassidic rapper Matisyahu , according to a list of performers recently released by the event's organizers. Dave Matthews, whose participation was previously announced, will be joined during his set by longtime collaborator Tim Reynolds .
Rounding out the eclectic list of confirmed acts are alt-rock outfits Guster , Supersuckers and The Ditty Bops, along with Allman-aligned acts Warren Haynes and The Derek Trucks Band.
Tickets for the event begin at $52 and are currently available at a variety of price levels, including a front row VIP package. More information can be found at the benefit's official site.
Nelson, Mellencamp and Young staged the first Farm Aid concert in 1985 to raise awareness about the loss of family farms and to raise funds to keep farm families on their land. Matthews, who has appeared on several Farm Aid bills, joined the organization's board of directors in 2001.
Organizers say that Farm Aid has raised more than $30 million over its history to support family farms.
Last year's Farm Aid show took place in the Philadelphia area. In addition to the event's mainstays, it also featured appearances by Los Lonely Boys, Jerry Lee Lewis with Roy Head, Arlo Guthrie, Gov't Mule, and Steve Earle & Allison Moorer.
