Etta James hospitalized

R&B great Etta James is off the B.B. King Blues Festival for now as she recovers from complications stemming from abdominal surgery.

The 69-year-old performer is said to be in stable condition at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Her manager, Lupe De Leon, reportedly said James is suffering post-op complications from a mid-June operation, the nature of which was not specified. James underwent weight-loss surgery in recent years and has shed more than 200 pounds, according to her website.

The legendary singer was scheduled to join B.B. King and Al Green on the festival tour, which kicked off earlier this week in Hollywood, FL. De Leon said James hopes to hook up with the outing in late August. In the meantime, R&B singer Chaka Kahn will take James' spot on the trek, which is detailed below.

"If it had been left solely up to her, she would have checked herself out of the hospital and started the tour regardless of her delicate health," De Leon told Reuters. "However, her doctor advised that were she to do so, it would put her at very great risk."

James, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement honoree and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, released her latest album, "All The Way," last year. The set is a collection of some of James' favorite songs including Prince's "Purple Rain," Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On," John Lennon's "Imagine" and Leonard Bernstein's "Somewhere."
