Musiq Soulchild takes slow jams across US
R&B/soul singer Musiq Soulchild is in the midst of his Luvanmusiq Tour, which is set to hit US clubs and theaters from coast to coast through mid-September.
Musiq's next stop is a two-night-stand at New Orleans' House of Blues tomorrow and Wednesday (7/24-7/25). He'll work his way to California for several shows next month and then back to the East Coast, wrapping Sept. 14-15 with two nights in New York City. Details are listed below.
The Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter, who's real name is Taalib Johnson, is supporting "Luvanmusiq," his fourth studio album and first for Atlantic Records. The set, released in March, is the performer's second to debut at No. 1 on The Billboard 200. So far, it has spawned hit R&B/hip-hop singles including "Buddy" and "Teachme," both of which are streaming at Musiq's MySpace page.
"Luvanmusic" comes three years after Musiq's award-winning third album, "Soulstar," and serves as a kind of reintroduction for the singer.
"I've been away for a little while," Musiq said in a statement. "The industry's changed and so have I--personally, mentally, psychologically. I look at my previous three albums as grad school, middle school and high school. Now with this new album, 'Luvanmusiq,' it's like I'm going off to college."
He added that he prefers to write and perform songs from a realistic perspective.
"A lot of people use songs for escapism and poetic aesthetics, but I would like to think that humanity has evolved. I would like to inspire people to start thinking that way."
The Philadelphia native, who was once homeless after dropping out of high school, hit the ground running with his 2000 debut, "Aijuswanaseing." The set scored platinum status, won awards from Billboard, Soul Train and ASCAP, and scored Musiq Soulchild his first Grammy nomination.
