Briefly: Dave Gahan, Barry Manilow, Annie Lennox, John Legend
Depeche Mode frontman Dave Gahan is eyeing a fall release for his sophomore solo album, "Hourglass."
Due out in late October, the forthcoming set follows Gahan's 2003 solo debut, "Paper Monsters." Gahan wrote and produced all of the songs on the new set in collaboration with drummer Christian Eigner and guitarist Andrew Philpott, both of Depeche Mode's touring band.
"Christian plays drums and Andrew can easily find his way around bass and guitar--and then we're basically cutting all this stuff up and f---ing with it by using ProTools, effects and all kinds of stuff," Gahan said in a press release. "Accidents do happen, and they're good."
A specific release date for "Hourglass" has not yet been announced.
Barry Manilow , who has spent the last couple of years performing exclusively at the Las Vegas Hilton, will branch out of Sin City this summer as he gears up for the release of his next covers album, "The Greatest Songs of the Seventies." So far, Manilow has lined up shows for Sept. 8 at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia and Sept. 9 at the TD Banknorth Garden in Boston, tickets for both of which hit the box office today.
Due in stores Sept. 18, "The Greatest Songs of the Seventies" will feature such favorites as The Beatles' "The Long and Winding Road," Elton John's "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word," Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water," The Hollies' "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother," Albert Hammond's "It Never Rains in Southern California," and The Carpenters' "(They Long to Be) Close to You," according to a press release. More information about the album, as well as the upcoming shows, is available at Manilow's website.
Annie Lennox has nailed down an Oct. 2 release date for "Songs of Mass Destruction," her follow-up to 2003's "Bare." The veteran singer recorded the set in London, Los Angeles and Miami with super-producer Glen Ballard.
"I feel closer to my own cutting edge than before and my voice seems to be in its prime," Lennox said in a press release.
Singer/songwriter John Legend has signed on to headline the third-annual Hot Stove Cool Music fundraising concert in Boston. Set to take place Aug. 24 at Fenway Park, the show will benefit the Foundation to Be Named Later, a branch of the Red Sox Foundation. Tickets are priced at $40 and are available starting today via the official Red Sox website.
