Countdown to Live Earth

As the monumental Live Earth concert gets ready to rock the world tomorrow (7/7), last-minute changes are the order of today, including the addition of a Washington, DC, show headlined by superstar country couple Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood .

Republican lawmakers managed to block former Vice President Al Gore's initiatives to stage a concert on the National Mall or on the Capitol lawn, so the US installment of the seven-continent event was bumped to New Jersey's Giants Stadium, according to Reuters. However, at the last minute, the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian stepped in, so now there will be two US shows.

The museum, which is on the National Mall about two blocks from the Capitol, can only hold about 200 people, but video screens will reportedly be set up for larger crowds to watch the show across the street near the Capitol reflecting pool. The DC concert will be one of two free Live Earth shows.

The other free show, in Rio de Janeiro, has been on-again, off-again over the last couple of days, but is currently set to go forward with acts including Lenny Kravitz , Macy Gray and Pharrell Williams . Earlier in the week, the concert was nixed over security concerns. Judge Maria Galhardo previously said the event site, Copacabana Beach, is not appropriate for huge concerts because the setting makes it difficult for police to craft a viable security plan, according to the Associated Press. While organizers convinced the judge otherwise, prosecutor Denise Tarin could still appeal before the show.

Meanwhile, an invitation to perform with Madonna at the London concert was apparently worth canceling a previous engagement for Gypsy punk band Gogol Bordello . Maddy extended the invitation to bandleader Eugene Hutz and violinist Sergey Ryabtsev, who canceled their gig at Scotland's T in the Park to make the Wembly Stadium show, according to Billboard.

The ambitious Live Earth event aims to bring attention to the climate crisis and get people to take action. The concerts, which will hit all seven continents over a 24-hour period, will feature more than 150 acts, from legends like Madonna, The Police and Genesis to contemporary headliners including Kanye West and Kelly Clarkson. Organizers expect an audience of more than 2 billion.

Live Earth will begin at Sydney's Aussie Stadium and move through shows at the Tokyo Dome; Shanghai's Oriental Pearl Tower; Johannesburg, South Africa's Cradle of Human Kind; London's Wembly Stadium; Hamburg, Germany's HSH Nordbank Arena; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil's Copacabana Beach; and the finales at New Jersey's Giants Stadium and the DC museum. The lineup for each city is listed below. A band of scientists will also perform in Antarctica, so that all seven continents are represented.

Another 6,000 satellite Live Earth events will also take place in more than 100 nations, according to a press release. Event founder Kevin Wall said the outpouring of support prompted the "Friends of Live Earth" program, which helps with events ranging from small gatherings in homes to public screenings of the main concerts.

In the US, portions of the Live Earth concert will be broadcast on the NBC network, the Spanish-language Telemundo network, the Sundance Channel, Bravo, MSNBC and Universal HD. The shows will be broadcast globally at Live Earth's website.
