Live Earth audience asked to commit
Live Earth founder Kevin Wall joined former Vice President Al Gore and Alliance for Climate Protection CEO Cathy Zoi today (6/28) to announce the Live Earth Call to Action--a series of commitments that will be asked of people across the globe to combat the climate crisis.
The organization is asking citizens of the world to sign a seven-point pledge to take personal action and demand government action in the battle. The names of those who sign will be shown on Live Earth's website, on the screens at concerts and on global television broadcasts. Details about the pledge are available at the event's website.
"Live Earth will ask people across the world to commit to changes in their lives and to move other people, communities, companies and governments to reduce our carbon output by 90 percent by 2050 and ensure there's a new, global treaty on climate change by 2009," Gore said in a statement.
The global concert, which will feature more than 150 acts from legends like The Police , Madonna and Genesis to contemporary headliners including Kanye West and Kelly Clarkson , will hit all seven continents over a 24-hour period. It will begin at Sydney's Aussie Stadium and move through shows at the Tokyo Dome; Shanghai's Oriental Pearl Tower; Johannesburg, South Africa's Cradle of Human Kind; London's Wembly Stadium; Hamburg, Germany's HSH Nordbank Arena; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil's Copacabana Beach; and the finale at East Rutherford, NJ's Giants Stadium. The lineup for each city is listed below.
Another 6,000 satellite Live Earth events will also take place in more than 100 nations July 7, according to a press release. Wall said the outpouring of support prompted the "Friends of Live Earth" program, which helps with events ranging from small gatherings in homes to public screenings of the main concerts.
Wall added that Live Earth has produced more than 60 short films, 30 PSAs featuring stars including Cameron Diaz and Penelope Cruz, and a book--The Live Earth Global Warming Survival Handbook--to serve as lasting media following the live events.
In the US, portions of the Live Earth concert will be broadcast on the NBC network, the Spanish-language Telemundo network, the Sundance Channel, Bravo, MSNBC and Universal HD. The shows will be broadcast globally at Live Earth's website. Organizers expect an audience of more than 2 billion.
