Beatles McCartney, Starr to join Cirque's 'Love' celebration
Surviving Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr--along with Yoko Ono Lennon, Olivia Harrison and Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberte--are scheduled to be on hand in Las Vegas June 26 for a special dedication in honor of late Beatles John Lennon and George Harrison.
The ceremony will take place in conjunction with the first anniversary of "The Beatles Love by Cirque du Soleil," a production that took up residency at The Mirage in Vegas last June. The show--which grew from George Harrison's long friendship with Laliberte--is the first major theatrical production allowed by The Beatles' company, Apple Corps. Ltd.
According to a press release, McCartney and Laliberte began discussing how to best recognize the late Beatles' contributions to "Love" in May of 2006, while the show was still in rehearsals. Cirque du Soleil designers subsequently created the two plaques that will be unveiled during the June 26 anniversary ceremony and permanently displayed in the lobby of the Love Theatre at The Mirage.
After the ceremony, Larry King is scheduled to interview the five guests of honor during a one-hour "Larry King Live," to be broadcast on CNN from The Beatles' Revolution Lounge at The Mirage. Afterwards, the guests will attend a special one-year anniversary performance of "Love."
Cirque du Soleil sources report that more than 872,000 tickets had been sold to "Love" as of June 1. Performances generally take place Thursday through Monday at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m., and tickets are available through Ticketmaster. (Ticketmaster is LiveDaily's parent company.)
The "Love" production is housed in a custom-built, 2,013-seat theater-in-the-round. Each seat is outfitted with three speakers, which Cirque officials claim make it the most complex audio system in the world.
The show's soundtrack, created by Beatles producer Sir George Martin and his son Giles, is a "mash-up" of Beatles classics that solely utilizes Beatles master tapes. The soundtrack album, issued in 2006, is certified platinum, and peaked at No. 4 on The Billboard 200 album chart.
