Live Review: Nelly Furtado in Phoenix

In her premiere hit, "I'm like a Bird," Nelly Furtado sings, "I don't know where my soul is/I don't know where my home is." Based on her 90-minute set Tuesday (6/19) at Phoenix's Dodge Theatre, it's clear the Canadian pop star belongs on the stage.

Furtado is a natural talent with clear and wide-ranging vocals. The Victoria, British Columbia native, who made multiple costume changes and often joined her four dancers, utilized the entire three-story stage, feeding off the energy of a sparse audience that gave her standing ovations after every number.

Wearing a red dress with her hair pulled back into a tight ponytail, Furtado appeared on stage hidden behind the giant LED disco ball that descended from the rafters. A large LED screen covered the stage's back wall.

She kicked off her show with "Say It Right," a collaboration with producer Timbaland from her hit 2006 album "Loose." Percussionist Saukrates provided the Timbaland vocals.

"Turn off the Light," from her debut album, "Whoa Nelly," was one of the performance's highlights, as she encouraged the audience to sing along with her. She stressed her Portuguese/Canadian ethnicity in the empowering "Powerless (Say What You Want)," during which fans waved their arms back and forth.

"Hey Phoenix, want to do a little dancing tonight?" she asked the crowd, before launching into "Do It." Adding a touch of the dramatic, Furtado and her two dancers used large, green-feathered fans during the number.

"Arizona, are you going to sing with me?" she asked mid-song.

The pace slowed down for "Wait for You," from "Loose." She used her band's instrumental jam as a cue to change outfits, allowing her dancers to take center stage.

"Showtime" gave the audience a bit of flash as the LED screen turned red and dancers descended from the staircase in couples, after which Furtado appeared wearing a purple, blue-lined gown that was short in the front and long in the back.

The show took an acoustic twist as she covered "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley accompanied only by acoustic guitars, and Saukrates on percussion and vocals. Afterward, she retreated to her 2003 album, "Folklore," with the minimalist song "Try," which allowed her to show her wonderful vocal range. Three-quarters of the way through the song, it turned into a power ballad as the guitarist and bassist walked on stage and the drummer played with full force.

Furtado showed off her own musical chops by strapping on a guitar for her latest single, "All Good Things."

If there was a downside to the concert, it was a break during which Saukrates--who doubled as one of the openers along with synth-pop star Kenna--and a female vocalist pointlessly covered Justin Timberlake's "SexyBack." (Timbaland also produced Timberlake's album "FutureSex/LoveSounds.") Furtado used the song to go backstage and change into tight silver pants and a black shirt.

Later, Furtado performed "Give It to Me," a song off Timbaland's recent album "Timbaland Presents Shock Value," that she sings with the producer and Timberlake. Saukrates took the liberty of performing the male parts.

She mixed up the arrangements of some of her older hits, including "I'm Like a Bird." Heavy guitars gave the melancholy song a decidedly rock feel.
