Paul McCartney brings 'secret' show to New York City
Paul McCartney will throw himself a party tonight (6/13) in New York City, staging a not-so-secret "secret" show to celebrate the release of his latest album, "Memory Almost Full."
The show at the 700-capacity Highline Ballroom will follow the format of last week's "secret" McCartney show in London, with a limited number of free admissions distributed to those lining up in front of the venue's box office for a wristband giveaway. Wristband distribution for the NYC show began at 12:30 p.m. EDT today.
McCartney hopes to gather momentum for his new studio effort, which was released with great fanfare on June 5 in the US. "Memory" is the first release on the Starbucks-owned Hear Music label. The album can be purchased at any of the coffee retailer's locations, as well as traditional retail outlets.
McCartney reunited with longtime producer and friend David Kahne to record the new effort, which draws upon McCartney's memories of childhood and time spent writing songs with John Lennon.
"In places, it's a very personal record and a lot of it is retrospective, drawing from memory, like memories from being a kid, from Liverpool and from summers gone," McCartney wrote recently on his website.
The video for the opening track, "Dance Tonight," was shot in April with director Michel Gondry ("Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"). It stars Natalie Portman and Mackenzie Crook.
"Memory Almost Full" is off to a quick sales start, grabbing the No. 3 slot in the US with first-week sales of 90,000, according to Billboard. According to Starbucks, more than 23,000 copies of "Memory Almost Full" were sold at Starbucks stores during the album's first day on the market, when it was played all day at all Starbucks locations.
Internationally, the album snagged the No. 5 spot on the UK charts and landed in the Top 10 of five other European countries.
